SEO Consultant

We wanted to give readers an idea for how long an SEO Consultant spends doing online marketing for a business website. Below are a detailed description and an estimated amount of each phase of the process.

The Short Answer

The time that an SEO Consultant spends managing a business website depends on that specific business and its goals. The more keywords you want to rank high for the more you will have to spend time on the site.

On-Site Optimization: Setup

One of the first things you’ll need to do in an SEO campaign is set your site up properly for SEO. That means possibly:

  • Redesigning the site
  • Structuring and updating your sitemap
  • Offering an intuitive navigation, including micro formatting
  • Implementing proper title tags and meta tags throughout
  • Checking for 404 errors or bad code
  • Improving site speed
  • Improving security

The first step in this process takes an average of about 5-10 hours a week. The range depends on the whether the site needs to redesigned, the number of pages that need to be checked for errors.

On-Site Optimization: Ongoing Monitoring and Troubleshooting

Once your initial setup is complete, the majority of on-site optimization management comes in the form of periodic checkups and adjustments.

Two or three times a week the consultant will log in to website analytical platforms linked with the website such as; Webmaster tools and Statcounter. On these websites, the consultant analyzes the websites’ traffic flow and other important stats.

Estimated Time: About 6-10 a week, depending on the size of your site and whether any problems arise.

Content Development

The main step of the process involves content development. The time that needs to be spent depends on the amount of news and information they want to share with website viewers. When posts are only required 1-2 times a week, then the number of hours spent will be less. However, if posts are required 3-5 times a week or more, it would require full-time hours.

Estimated Time: Roughly 6 to 40 hours a week.

Off-Site Syndication and Relationship Building

Off-site SEO is required to compliment the on-site work that is done. This includes backlink inking website content, updating social media platforms, creating videos about the business and posting to relevant blogs online.

Estimated Time: Between five and 20 hours a week.

Measurement and Analysis

The final part of the process is measuring and analyzing the results of all the work that is done as part of the website management. This could include analyzing content to see if your target is enjoying it. It could also include seeing how much traffic is coming to the business website because of social media posts. Also, looking at how many clicks Adwords ad is getting, and whether it’s converting into calls from potential clients for the business the SEO consultant is helping.

Estimated Time: One to two hours a week.
